The Czech Ministry of Defense has approved the purchase of Leopard 2A8 tanks for the army, the country's defense ministry reported.

According to Defense Minister Jana Chernokhova, tanks are an integral part of the heavy brigade, so the purchase of new equipment should increase the Czech Republic's defense capabilities. It will also allow the country to fulfill its obligations to NATO allies.

In the first stage, 44 command and staff and battle tanks will be purchased for 32.76 billion Czech crowns. An additional 5 billion crowns will be allocated to cover inflation and exchange rate fluctuations. In total, the agreement plans to purchase up to 58 tanks in these modifications.

It is noted that the tanks will be purchased together with self-defense and mine protection systems. In addition, the list includes comprehensive logistical support, including spare parts, support, documentation and crew training.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense still plans to purchase up to 19 tanks in four additional versions (engineering, recovery, bridge-laying and driver training). Thus, the Czech army will receive at least 61 and at most 77 Leopard 2A8 tanks in six versions. At the same time, purchases for the Czech Republic are made on the same terms as for Germany. This allowed to reduce the final cost of the tanks per unit.

The first Leopard 2A8 tanks will enter the Czech Army in 2028. Deliveries are scheduled for 2031.

In addition, a separate agreement provides for the involvement of the Czech defense industry in cooperation with the Leopard 2A8 manufacturer. It is expected that Czech companies will produce vehicles for their army, as well as become part of the Leopard supply chain for other customers. This agreement is planned to be signed no later than the day of signing the main contract, and at least eleven Czech companies will participate in the program.
