The National Guard has modernized Soviet Grad MLRS
The National Guard of Ukraine is upgrading its BM-21 "Grad" multiple launch rocket systems. Images of the upgraded MLRS were shown by NGU Commander Oleksandr Pivnenko.
"In order to improve this type of weapon, a technical task was developed at the NGU, which provided for a deep modernization of the platform and combat systems. In particular, the basic chassis based on the Soviet Ural vehicle was replaced with a modern MAN platform (6x6), which provides better mobility, cross-country ability, and reliability in difficult combat conditions," his Facebook post says.
According to him, improvements have also affected the ergonomics and safety of the crew. The new machine has more comfortable working conditions for the personnel, in particular due to the updated cabin and optimized interior space.
In addition, electronic warfare equipment and other solutions have been installed that will help to more effectively use such equipment in combat conditions. Among other things, the possibility of transporting additional ammunition is provided, which increases the autonomy of the combat vehicle.
"The key element of the modernization was the integration of modern fire control and guidance systems. New digital complexes allow for much more accurate and efficient target detection, coordinate calculation, and opening fire. Vertical and horizontal guidance systems received electric drives with remote control, which increases the speed of response and accuracy of combat work," added Oleksandr Pivnenko.
According to him, the artillery part of the BM-21 MLRS has been integrated onto a new vehicle platform with completely updated combat systems. It now meets the requirements of the modern battlefield in the context of the use of MLRS.
Oleksandr Pivnenko noted that this allows NGU units to more effectively perform fire support tasks in conditions of maneuver warfare.
