The administration of US President Donald Trump has informed Congress of its intention to give the "green light" to the export of defense products to Ukraine through the Direct Commercial Sales (DCS) mechanism for an amount of $50 million. Kyiv Post reports this, citing diplomatic sources.
This is the first such authorization since Trump returned to the White House. In the last aid package to Ukraine, Congress approved the sale of weapons under the DCS program worth more than $ 1 billion. The previous US administration under President Joe Biden allowed some of this money to be used for the transfer of much-needed weapons.
From 2015 to 2023, the United States tacitly authorized the continued export of defense goods and services to Ukraine worth over $ 1.6 billion through DCS.
Colby Badwar, a security assistance analyst at research group Tochnyi, explained that all DCSs are silent; they are not announced publicly.
"The news here is basically that it [US arms sales] is continuing, despite everyone predicting that Trump would cut Ukraine off completely," he added.
A $ 50 million license sale notification was filed with Congress under the Arms Export Control Act. The proposed sale covers the export of defense-related goods, including technical data, and defense services to Ukraine.
