The United States plans to achieve the production of 100,000 155 mm artillery shells per month by October 2025. This is reported by Militarnyi with reference to Soldat & Technik.
This will be the result of a massive modernization of the industrial base that the Pentagon began with the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. At that time, the US produced only 14,500 shells per month, but now this figure has increased to 40,000.
To achieve the new volume, the Pentagon has invested nearly $5 billion in expanding production capacity in recent years. Unlike many NATO countries, the US military directly controls the production of ammunition, relying on infrastructure that dates back to World War II.
A new shell casing manufacturing plant, capable of producing up to 30,000 units per month, opened in Texas in 2024. A TNT production facility is also planned in Kentucky, the first in 40 years.
All this will allow to increase the production of artillery ammunition and ensure the independence and reliability of supply chains. In 2026, the production volume is planned to increase to one million shells per year.
