European Commissioner calls for a "drone wall" on the EU's eastern border

- 16 July, 01:46 PM

European Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius has called on Lithuania and its Baltic neighbours to create a joint defence system based on unmanned technology, he said in an interview with Lithuanian broadcaster LRT, Kryla reports.

This call was made after a drone from Belarus violated Lithuanian airspace. The European Commissioner noted that the incident demonstrated the reality of threats from Russia and Belarus, and also highlighted the issue of Lithuania's readiness to counter drone invasion.

"Whether Lithuania is ready to defend itself against such drones and whether it has the necessary capabilities to do so remains an unanswered question," said Andrius Kubilius.

The European Commissioner called on the countries of the region to review the strategy for protecting the European Union's eastern border. He stressed the need to integrate innovative technologies, including unmanned systems, in addition to the already existing physical barriers.

"I continue to call on Lithuania and the countries of the region working on the so-called Eastern Border Security Plan to go beyond physical barriers. The creation of a wall of drones should be included in such a plan," he emphasized.

The European Commissioner also emphasized that it is necessary to create a system for the operational production of drones, which would allow the Baltic countries to quickly produce the required number of devices adapted for border protection.

Recall that the incident occurred on July 10, 2025. Then a homemade aircraft flew from Belarus to Lithuania. At first it was identified as a Shahed, but later Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Šakaliene clarified that it was a Gerber drone.
