The Indian Navy has received the eighth Project 11356 frigate with gas turbine engines manufactured by the Ukrainian state-owned enterprise "Zorya" - "Mashproekt". The ship was built at the Russian shipbuilding plant "Yantar" in Kaliningrad, writes Militarnyi.
The frigate INS Tamala has successfully completed acceptance and transfer trials with the participation of representatives of the Indian Navy. It will be transferred to India by September 2025 and will enter the ranks of the country's Western Fleet to patrol the Indian Ocean.
The ships of this project use Ukrainian gas turbines of the M7N series manufactured by the State Enterprise "Zorya" - "Mashproekt" from Mykolaiv. These power plants were purchased by the Indian side from "Ukroboronprom".
Interestingly, the Tamala ship was planned to be built as the Admiral Istomin frigate for the Russian Black Sea Fleet in 2013. However, after Ukraine imposed restrictions on the supply of gas turbine units to Russia, the construction of the ship was frozen.
Already in 2018, Russia and India signed an intergovernmental contract for the completion of two unfinished frigates of project 11356 "Admiral Butakov" and "Admiral Istomin", which were at the "Yantar" plant, with their subsequent transfer to the Indian Navy. In 2019, the construction of the ships was resumed in the interests of the Indian Navy.
It should be noted that India is actively working on rearming its own army. Earlier, we reported that the country successfully tested a new laser system, the Mk-II(A), which is capable of effectively detecting and neutralizing UAVs, countering drone swarm attacks, and disrupting surveillance systems.
