The German government has adopted a bill to accelerate and simplify defense procurement in order to increase the defense capabilities of the Bundeswehr, Ukrinform reports.
According to the agency, the details of the plan were presented during a briefing by Federal Government spokesman Stefan Cornelius. He also recalled the task set by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to "in the long term" make the Bundeswehr the strongest conventional army in Europe.
"This is an ambitious goal that cannot be achieved in one day," said a spokesman for the Federal Government.
According to Stefan Cornelius, the new legislation will make it possible to obtain urgently needed weapons systems more quickly. The spokesman noted that this will strengthen cooperation in the field of weapons production within NATO.
Given the threat from the Russian Federation, time is of the essence.
At the same time, Defense Ministry spokesman Mitko Muller said that the head of the department, Boris Pistorius, is in contact with enterprises of the defense-industrial complex.
Among other things, the bill provides for better protection of military airports. This includes a ban on building near air traffic control radar stations.
The document is valid until 2035.
