- 20 July, 10:34 AM

The Italian Army has received the first of 90 modernized Ariete C2 tanks, which will replace the Ariete C1 main battle tank, which was adopted in the late 1990s. This marked the beginning of a large-scale modernization program for the country's armored forces, which is being implemented by the CIO (Consorzio Iveco–OTO Melara) consortium, created by Iveco Defence Vehicles and Leonardo. This is reported by the Army Recognition Group.

The Ariete C2 tank is equipped with a new 1500 hp diesel engine (V12 MTCA), which provides improved torque and cross-country ability on various types of terrain. The transmission and braking system have been updated to better withstand the additional load and increase safety. The comprehensive armor upgrade includes passive and reactive kits, as well as the ability to integrate active protection systems.

The fire control system is now fully digital and includes advanced thermal and infrared cameras for improved combat. The turret has been re-equipped with electric drives instead of hydraulics, which increases the accuracy of guidance. A new generation of optoelectronics from Leonardo has also been installed, which significantly expands the ability to detect targets in all weather conditions.

Modernized communication facilities include satellite radios and an updated command panel with navigation integration. Special attention has been paid to crew protection - modern fire extinguishing and explosion protection systems have been installed, as well as improved workplace ergonomics.

The Italian Ministry of Defense sees the Ariete C2 as an interim solution to maintain the combat capability of tank units until the transition to new generation platforms. The delivery of the remaining Ariete C2 units is planned over the next few years.
