Boeing has unveiled a rendering of the F/A-XX, its version of a sixth-generation carrier-based fighter for the US Navy as part of the Next Generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program, Interesting Engineering reports.

The image, shown last week at the Tailhook symposium, showed the manufacturer's vision for a new fighter jet model to replace the aging F/A-18 Super Hornet fleet. It is noted that the plan to replace the aircraft has already been approved by Congress and has funding of almost $2.4 billion.

Returning to the F/A-XX, the aircraft is said to be able to withstand saltwater, launch from a moving deck, and land on a runway shorter than a football field. The Boeing F/A-XX will also be able to fly over 1,700 miles, 25% more than the current F-35C Lightning II. This is crucial in the Pacific, where Chinese long-range missiles pose a threat to US aircraft carriers.

In terms of appearance, the F/A-XX has a tailless design with a delta wing and a cockpit reminiscent of the Boeing F-47 prototype. Another feature of the aircraft is the use of canards. These small wings, which are installed in front of the main ones and improve maneuverability during difficult landings on the deck. They also provide stabilization of the aircraft during the transition from subsonic to supersonic speeds. This is the so-called "canard" scheme.

At the same time, this configuration improves maneuverability at low speeds, but definitely increases the aircraft's radar visibility.

In addition, the F/A-XX will reportedly be able to use artificial intelligence and control drones that expand the aircraft's firepower. The aircraft is expected to carry a modular payload, including advanced air-to-air missiles.

Boeing's competitor is Northrop Grumman. Lockheed Martin's project was rejected in March due to non-compliance with US Navy requirements.

Boeing previously tested an updated Harpoon anti-ship missile. The new version will not enter service until 2026.
