Australia has delivered the first M1A1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine as part of its defense support. This was announced by Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal, noting that most of the 49 promised tanks are already in service with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The rest are expected in the coming months.
"This significant reinforcement was part of an aid package worth $245 million, which is part of the total of $1.5 billion provided by Australia since the start of the full-scale war," Denys Shmyhal said.
According to the Australian government, the decision to transfer the tanks was made back in October 2024. The transfer process started in May 2025. The actual transfer of the equipment became possible after obtaining permission from the US, since these tanks are American-made.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles noted that these vehicles will enhance the mobility and firepower of the Ukrainian army and make a significant contribution to countering Russian aggression.
Australia, which is not a NATO member, remains one of the largest providers of military assistance to Ukraine among countries outside the alliance.
