The European Union will impose minimal fines on Apple and Meta for violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA) to avoid escalating tensions with US President Donald Trump, the Financial Times reports.

Apple will be fined and forced to review its App Store rules due to antitrust concerns. Meanwhile, Meta will be fined and forced to change its "pay or consent" model, which allows users to pay or consent to tracking and data collection.

The European Union will also close another investigation into Apple over browser selection options on the iPhone. The company was previously reported to have made the necessary changes to comply with the DMA. The investigation had been ongoing since March 2024.

Companies that violate the DMA face fines of up to 10% of annual revenue, but the EU plans to impose much smaller amounts because the law is still new and may be subject to further changes.

However, the EU does not want to increase tensions with the US, as Trump has already criticized the ongoing investigations and fines for American companies. The US president has also threatened to impose tariffs on countries that levy taxes on digital services from American firms.
