Chinese company Xiaomi is considering changing the numbering scheme of its HyperOS operating system, skipping version 3 and going straight to HyperOS 26, GSMArena reports. The move could be inspired by Apple's decision to similarly change the numbering of iOS, macOS, and iPadOS, tying them to the calendar year.
The new HyperOS 26 interface is expected to be released in October or November 2025 and will be based on Android 16, offering new improvements for the Xiaomi ecosystem.
The new naming system will allow users to easily identify the year of release of a version, which will make updates more understandable. However, for Xiaomi, it also means the need to adhere to a strict annual release cycle, as a release delay can break the logic of numbering and confuse users.
If the company implements this change, it could be part of a general trend among tech giants to optimize the names of their software products.
