Shares of Chinese technology giant Xiaomi fell sharply on Monday, October 13, 2025, after reports of an accident involving an SU7 electric car in Chengdu, killing one driver. On the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the drop reached 8.7% - the worst performance since April, CNBC writes.

Eyewitnesses and video footage showed that passersby were unable to open the car door to save the passenger. Police said the accident occurred after the SU7 collided with another sedan, killing the 31-year-old driver, who was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol. Xiaomi has not yet commented on the incident.

This is the second fatal accident involving the SU7 this year, raising questions about "smart driving" systems and the safety of electronic door handles.

The electronic handles, widely used by Tesla and other EV manufacturers, rely on sensors and can fail in the event of a fire or power outage. China is considering a possible ban on such handles, while in the US, NHTSA has launched an investigation into about 174,000 Tesla Model Ys over similar issues.

The incident once again highlights the importance of the safety of modern electric vehicles and the potential risks of new technologies.
