Xiaomi recalls over 116,000 SU7 electric cars due to autopilot issues

- 19 September, 02:57 PM

Xiaomi has announced a recall of 116,877 SU7 electric vehicles manufactured between February 2024 and August 2025. The reason is a flaw in the driver assistance system that may prevent it from recognizing situations on the road in a timely manner and warning the driver, the South China Morning Post reports.

China's State Administration for Market Regulation points to "insufficient recognition ability" of autopilot functions, which can cause the car to warn the driver too late or fail to react in atypical road situations.

The company will fix the bug with free firmware updates "over the air", without requiring owners to visit the service. According to industry center CATARC, as of July, more than 305,000 SU7 electric vehicles have already been delivered in China, so the recall will affect more than a third of the fleet. After the news, Xiaomi shares in Hong Kong fell by 0.3%.

Pressure on the manufacturer increased after a fatal accident in March 2025 in Anhui province, where an SU7 in driver-assist mode crashed into a curb, killing three passengers. An investigation found that the system asked the driver to take control just two seconds before impact, raising questions about its reliability and advertising promises.

After that, the Ministry of Industry introduced monitoring of road tests and warned car companies against exaggerating the capabilities of autopilot.

Analysts believe that the current response, while potentially dampening demand, also demonstrates Xiaomi's willingness to react quickly and correct shortcomings in order to maintain confidence in its first production electric car and new YU7 crossover.
