Company X, formerly known as Twitter, is planning to abandon the private messaging feature, Engadget reports, citing X platform software engineer Zach Varunek.
Zach Varunek has announced that direct messages (DMs) will soon be removed entirely. In their place, X is reportedly planning to launch a new chat platform called XChat.
The new platform promises to be a full-fledged communication tool, including features that were not previously available. These include end-to-end message encryption, file transfers, the ability to mark messages as unread and delete individual messages for all users. In addition, XChat may include a PIN verification feature, reminiscent of secure messengers such as Signal.

Earlier this year, rumors about XChat emerged when an XChat icon was spotted in the platform's interface instead of the "Messages" section.
The company's owner, Elon Musk, has also previously said that he plans to use X for texting and calling, abandoning the phone number. When exactly the XChat feature will appear is still unknown.
