Microsoft is developing a new feature for Windows 11 called Cross Device Resume , which will work similarly to Handoff in Apple's macOS, writes Windows Central.
It was spotted during a session at the Build 2025 conference, but the demonstration video was later removed. It showed a user starting to listen to Spotify on their smartphone and then seamlessly continuing on their PC — simply by clicking the app’s icon in the taskbar.
Microsoft senior product manager Aakash Varshni explained that Windows 11 will be able to display a small reminder icon on the app icon if it was recently used on a mobile device. For example, if you were listening to music on Spotify on your phone, Windows will offer to resume playback on your PC from the same place. When you hover over the icon, the user will see the inscription: “Continue: Recently opened on your mobile device”.
The feature allows you to quickly switch between devices without losing context. According to Varshni, this provides “a seamless one-click transition, without having to search or restart everything,” which is especially convenient for multimedia or work applications.
Incidentally, Microsoft has already tried to implement a similar feature in Windows 10, as part of Project Rome, which allowed applications to work on multiple devices. However, the idea did not gain widespread acceptance back then. This time, the company hopes that Cross Device Resume will gain more support among developers and users.
As a reminder, Microsoft also announced at the Build 2025 conference an updated Microsoft 365 Copilot application, which, among other things, will allow companies to easily create their own language models based on their data. The company also showed NLWeb, a project that allows you to add AI search to any website.
