WhatsApp launches message translation on iOS and Android

- 24 September, 11:55 AM

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a message translation feature in the app for iOS and Android.

Android supports six languages — English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. iPhone users have a much wider list — over 19 languages, including Ukrainian, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Turkish, and others.

To translate a message, simply press and hold it, select "Translate" and select the desired language. On Android, an additional feature is available - automatic translation of the entire conversation, when all new messages in the chat will immediately be displayed in the selected language.

Translations are performed directly on the device, ensuring privacy. WhatsApp does not have access to the content of encrypted chats. To work, you need to download language packs, which will be stored locally. The feature works in private chats, groups, and even channels.

It's not yet known when translation will be available on the web and Windows apps. WhatsApp says the feature is rolling out gradually, so it's recommended that you update your app to get it as soon as possible.
