WhatsApp messenger is used by more than three billion people every month, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said during its financial reporting for the first quarter of 2025, TechCrunch reports.
WhatsApp was founded in 2009, and Meta acquired the messenger for $19 billion in 2014. It has become a key part of the company's business and reached two billion active users in 2020, now joining the list of services with three billion users alongside Facebook.
Although WhatsApp does not display ads, it remains one of the main platforms for distributing Meta AI services. According to CFO Susan Lee, WhatsApp is where users interact with AI the most among all the company's apps, especially in private chats.
At the same time, Zuckerberg notes that while WhatsApp makes it easy to use artificial intelligence, people in the US prefer standard messengers for messaging. Therefore, Meta created a separate app, Meta AI, and also announced plans to introduce subscriptions.
In addition, the business version of the messenger — WhatsApp Business — continues to grow and provides the bulk of the app family's revenue, which amounts to $510 million.
As a reminder, it was also previously reported that Threads, another Meta platform that was created to compete with X (formerly Twitter), already has 350 million monthly active users.
