During the I/O 2025 conference, Google announced the integration of its Gemini AI assistant into various devices, including cars. In response, Volvo said it would become the first automaker to implement this technology in its models, writes The Verge.
Gemini will allow drivers and passengers to communicate with the car in a natural way. The assistant will be able to translate languages, provide navigation tips, search for places, respond to user requests and even help with climate control. This innovation should reduce the driver's "cognitive load" and make driving safer.
Gemini will also be available in cars with Android Auto, but sooner rather than later. Full integration into Android Automotive will follow later this year.
In addition, Volvo will be the main hardware platform for testing future Android Automotive features. The company will be the first to receive new updates - even before their official launch. Incidentally, Volvo has a long-standing partnership with Google: its cars were the first to receive high-resolution maps, YouTube and voice climate control. Polestar, a Volvo brand, became the first brand with Android Automotive OS.
Google emphasizes that cars are becoming a key environment for Gemini, in particular due to the need for safe and intelligent driving in complex environments.
