Great Britain has banned the export of gamepads to Russia
The UK has imposed new sanctions against Russia, banning the export of gamepads and other technological equipment, writes Politico.
The government explained this by saying that game console controllers are used to control drones used on the front in Ukraine. In total, the new package includes 150 trade restrictions, covering not only gaming accessories but also software that can be used to search for new oil and gas deposits.
Sanctions Minister Stephen Doughty said the new sanctions were aimed at weakening Russia's war machine, saving Ukrainian lives and protecting British businesses. He said the UK was "blocking Russia's access to advanced technology" that could be used for military purposes.
The new measures came into effect immediately and demonstrate the UK government’s increasing focus on trade sanctions. In October 2024, a special body, the Office of Trade Sanctions Implementation (OTSI), was even created to coordinate these restrictions.
The sanctions also target exports of electronic components, chemicals, equipment, and metals. They are intended to limit Russia's ability to produce military equipment and develop its defense industry.
Separately, the government has stressed that video game controllers should no longer be used for killing on the battlefield. The transfer of technology for the production of critical electronic components will also be banned. Britain is keen to prevent its technology from contributing to the strengthening of Russian military capabilities.
