Scientists from the University of Science and Technology of China have developed a unique laser device that can read small text from a distance of more than a kilometer, BGR reports, citing the scientific journal Physical Review Letters. Using the active intensity interferometry method, they were able to overcome the traditional limitations of optics and atmospheric interference.

Unlike conventional cameras that collect light waves through lenses, this laser device uses multiple emitters to create pseudo-thermal illumination. The reflected laser beams are captured by two telescopes, and the resulting data is processed by a special algorithm, allowing for highly detailed images.

Scientists conducted an experiment in which they placed aluminum plates with the letters "USTC" cut out at a distance of 1.36 km, measuring 8x9 mm, where the width of each letter was only 1.5 mm. The laser system successfully read the text, providing a resolution that exceeds the theoretical limit of a single telescope by 14 times. The technology works even when the signal is weak or distorted, including due to weather conditions.

Although still in the research stage, this development has significant potential for applications in remote sensing, non-contact imaging in difficult environments, and high-precision surveillance. In the future, it may become an important tool for public safety and disaster monitoring.
