TikTok may soon solve its problem with the ban in the US by selling part of the business and launching a new app. According to The Verge, citing The Information, the company is working on a separate version of the application, codenamed M2 (TikTok's current codename is M), which is scheduled to appear in the US App Store and Google Play on September 5, 2025.
In January of this year, a new version of the law to protect American users from programs controlled by foreign states came into force. It obliged ByteDance to either sell TikTok or stop its operation in the United States. On January 19, the law came into effect, but the service was only available for one day, as President-elect Trump postponed the blocking of the platform for 90 days.
Donald Trump recently said that he has already found buyers for TikTok, and it is a group of "very wealthy people." Now, the US President's administration says that a deal to sell TikTok that would meet the requirements of the law is close to being signed and will be released along with a new, separate version of the app.
It is reported that the current version of TikTok will be gradually removed from stores, and by March 2026 it is planned to completely stop working.
A controlling stake is expected to go to investors not affiliated with China, while ByteDance will retain a minority stake, as required by law. Final approval of the deal also depends on the Chinese government, which is also negotiating with the Trump administration over tariffs.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump recently officially allowed American tech companies to bypass the current law banning TikTok, claiming he has the power to override Congressional action on national security grounds.
