Five scientists from Lviv Polytechnic National University have been included in the prestigious list of the TOP-2% of the most cited scientists on the planet.

As stated in the university's statement, one of the world's largest publishing companies, Elsevier, has released an updated database that identifies the world's most influential scientists based on standardized scientometric indicators for 2024.

It is noted that the ranking in the Elsevier database is based on two categories:

▪️ Career-long (for the entire career) — analysis of the scientific activity of a scientist from the beginning of his career to the end of 2024; the TOP-2% category in this direction included three representatives of Lviv Polytechnic: the rector of the university Nataliya Shakhovska, deputy head of the department of information systems and networks of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Vasyl Lytvyn, and associate professor of the department of information systems and networks of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Viktoriya Vysotska;

▪️ Single recent year (for the last year) — an assessment of the citation rate of publications only for the 2024 calendar year; in this category, three university scientists also confirmed their high level of influence: Associate Professor of the Department of Artificial Intelligence Systems of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Ivan Izonin, Senior Researcher of the Department of Material Strength and Structural Mechanics of the Institute of Construction, Infrastructure and Life Safety Bohdan Vasyliv, and Associate Professor of the Department of Information Systems and Networks of the Institute of Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Viktoriya Vysotska.

" Viktoriya Vysotska deserves special attention, as she entered the TOP-2% rating in both categories — both in terms of her entire scientific career and the results of the last year, which indicates a consistently high level of her scientific research," Lviv Polytechnic noted.

It is reported that scientists are classified into 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields according to the Science-Metrix classification. The study itself was conducted by a group of scientists from Stanford University based on data from the Scopus database. The indicators that affect the position in the overall ranking include:

▪️number of citations of the author;

▪️h-index and hm-index with correction for co-authorship;

▪️indicators with and without self-citations;

▪️citation rates;

▪️information about retracted articles and citations from/to them.

We will remind that in March 2025, the director of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technologies of the university, founder of the Department of AI Systems, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Nataliya Shakhovska won the election for the rector of the Lviv Polytechnic National University. At that time, she was supported by 1,867 voters, which amounted to 55.07% of the votes. According to Shakhovska, the university plans to use various models of artificial intelligence to streamline document flow, reduce paper bureaucracy, and digitize processes.

As we wrote earlier, recently the first seven universities joined the Brave1 military technology cluster to develop Ukrainian defense tech through students and scientists. Lviv Polytechnic National University also joined the cluster. The cooperation includes: holding joint events aimed at developing technologies, including hackathons; supporting universities in developing innovative solutions in the defense sector; involving scientists in consulting with developers; organizing internships for students in cluster companies.
