US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will impose a 100% tariff on the distribution of films produced outside the US, Hypebeast reports.
Trump says the decision should save American cinema, which he believes is rapidly declining due to foreign investment and incentives that force filmmakers to shoot films abroad.
"This is a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat. It is, in addition to everything else, messaging and propaganda," Trump noted in his post on Truth Social.
Governments in many countries have increased financial incentives to attract foreign film producers. According to forecasts by Amepere Analysis, by 2025, most of the global film production budget, which will reach $248 billion, will be captured by foreign countries. Major studios such as Disney, Netflix and Universal Pictures have already started shooting films in the UK, Canada and Australia.
It is not yet known how these changes will affect streaming platforms or how the pricing process itself will be implemented. The International Motion Picture Association (MPA), which represents the major studios, has not yet commented on the situation.
