Trump signs AI Action Plan to accelerate development of artificial intelligence
US President Donald Trump has signed executive orders launching the AI Action Plan, a comprehensive strategy for the development of artificial intelligence and AI infrastructure. The plan includes deregulating the industry, simplifying permitting procedures and revising environmental standards to accelerate the construction of data centers, Bloomberg reports.
Trump said the US must "do whatever it takes to lead the world in artificial intelligence," emphasizing the importance of creating uniform federal standards instead of different rules in each state.
The document commits the government to working only with companies whose LLMs are "free from top-down ideological bias." The plan eliminates the previous Biden administration’s requirements for AI model security reviews and risk reporting. It also outlines the need to invest in retraining workers to help them adapt to changes in the job market due to automation and new technologies.
The AI Action Plan calls for increased exports of American AI solutions and controls over technologies that could end up in the hands of US rivals, particularly China. The document calls for industry proposals for comprehensive hardware and software packages, models and applications to be offered to allies through government funding programs. The Trump administration has already eased restrictions on the sale of NVIDIA and AMD chips to China under a new trade deal that allows exports of the "fourth most powerful" generation of H20 chips to keep Chinese developers in the US tech ecosystem.
The plan pays special attention to power supply for data centers, which is critical for scaling infrastructure. The document proposes to stabilize the power grid and invest in additional energy sources, including nuclear and geothermal generation. Trump emphasized that the United States will "unleashing all forms of energy, including natural gas, oil and clean, beautiful coal" to ensure national security and the country's competitiveness in the global AI race.
The AI Action Plan has become the Trump administration's largest technology initiative since he returned to power. The president has said that winning in AI will be a challenge for the United States "since the dawn of the Space Age" and will require the maximum mobilization of the country's scientific and industrial potential.
