Trump wants green card applicants already in the US to provide their social media profiles

- 24 March, 01:30 PM

Donald Trump's administration has proposed requiring green card applicants who are already legally in the US to submit their social media profiles for verification, the Independent reports.

This proposal expands on existing practices for visa applicants from abroad to improve identity verification. In particular, collecting social media IDs would help verify permanent resident applicants and asylum seekers.

The move has sparked significant public outrage, with many people believing it violates the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech.

The proposal came after several controversial cases, including the detention of green card holder Mahmoud Khalil, whom the Trump administration accused of supporting Hamas, and the deportation of doctor Rasha Alawieh over suspected ties to Hezbollah.

The Trump administration is also expanding background checks for visa and green card holders. An agreement is currently being considered between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that would allow the IRS to review the tax records of individuals suspected of being in the country illegally.

All of these measures raise concerns among human rights activists due to possible violations of privacy and human rights.
