Trump doesn't want Apple to expand iPhone production in India

- 15 May, 02:00 PM

US President Donald Trump said he had urged Apple CEO Tim Cook not to expand iPhone production in India, despite the company's plans. Trump made the remarks at a press conference in Qatar, Axios reports.

According to Trump, he personally told Cook: "Tim you're my friend, I've treated you very good. I don't want you building in India." The president emphasized that the United States has long tolerated Apple manufacturing in China, but is now not interested in moving production to another foreign country.

The statements came amid news that Apple is looking to significantly expand production in India to supply smartphones to the US, a move the company sees as an alternative to Chinese manufacturing amid tensions between the US and China and new trade restrictions.

At the same time, Trump mentioned a possible new trade agreement between the US and India, under which the Indian side would allegedly not impose tariffs on American goods.

Apple shares fell 1% in premarket trading following Trump's comments. The company has not yet commented on the situation.
