TikTok will get a feature similar to Community Notes in X

- 17 April, 03:51 PM

TikTok is starting to test a feature similar to Community Notes in X. It aims to add context to videos and could be a tool in the fight against misinformation. The feature will be tested in the US first.

The new feature will be called Footnotes and will use the open-source Community Notes model. Once implemented, TikTok users will only see notes that reach a certain threshold of usefulness.

Meanwhile, the Footnotes feature will use a ranking system based on “bridges” rather than engagement levels. TikTok describes its algorithm as one that favors content that promotes understanding between people with opposing views.

To be eligible to annotate videos, users must have a profile that is at least six months old, be over 18 years old, and have no history of violating our Community Guidelines. Candidates who meet these criteria can apply today.

At the same time, TikTok, unlike Meta, is not removing fact-checkers. The social network will continue to work with more than 20 IFCN-accredited organizations to evaluate its content, and Footnotes will become just an additional tool.
