Threads will have its own messages — without Instagram integration

- 11 June, 11:23 AM

Meta has begun testing its own private messaging system in Threads. The feature will first be available in Hong Kong, Argentina, and Thailand, Mark Zuckerberg announced.

Threads previously had basic integration with Instagram, allowing users to send posts to friends via Instagram Direct. However, this required switching between apps, which was confusing, especially if the recipient didn't have a Threads account.

Meta is now adding a separate DM tab to Threads, which only supports one-on-one chats for now. Group chats are not yet planned. The company says the feature will be available in other countries soon.

Previously, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri was skeptical of the idea and insisted on using shared infrastructure with Instagram. Now Meta has changed its approach and decided to implement a standalone messenger for Threads.

Recall, in May it became known that Threads reached 350 million users per month, adding 30 million per quarter.
