The Last of Us was renewed for a third season before the first episode of the second season even aired, but it's a long wait. HBO Max CEO Casey Bloys told Variety that the sequel won't be released until 2027.

Meanwhile, Bloys noted that series showrunner Craig Mazin is still deciding whether the third season will be the last or whether the rest of the story will be divided into several parts.

"The series is definitely planned for 2027. Craig is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season," Bloys said.

Meanwhile, the CEO of HBO Max commented on Naughty Dog's creative director Neil Druckmann's decision to no longer participate in the production of the series. He thanked him for his involvement and noted that Druckmann is first and foremost a game developer, which is what he decided to focus on.

"Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning... It was fantastic to have Neil involved. A lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got. So I understand why he needs to focus on that. But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show," Bloys said.

While it's unclear whether The Last of Us Season 3 will be the final season, viewers can expect the story to focus more on Abby, played by Caitlin Dever, who became one of the main characters in Season 2. No other details about the sequel are available at this time.
