Tesla receives first permit to launch robotaxi in California
Tesla has received the first of a series of necessary permits from California to launch robo-taxis in the state, Reuters reports.
The California Public Communications Commission (CPUC) has approved the company’s application for a Contract Passenger Transportation (TCP) permit, which allows it to own a fleet of vehicles and provide rides for employees. The permit is required to apply to launch an autonomous taxi service in California. However, it does not authorize the company to provide rides in autonomous vehicles to the public.
Tesla plans to launch driverless taxis in California and Texas as early as 2025. In October, the company unveiled a concept car called the Cybercab, which has no steering wheel or pedals. Tesla applied for a TCP in November 2024, but has not yet applied for other necessary permits.
To fully launch its autonomous taxi service, Tesla also needs permits from the California Department of Transportation (DMV) and another from the CPUC.
