Global sales of electric cars increased by 26% and reached a record 2.1 million units
In September 2025, global sales of electric cars increased by 26% and reached a record 2.1 million units compared to the same period last year.
As Reuters reports, citing data from research company Rho Motion, China accounted for about two-thirds of global sales — 1.3 million units.
North American electric vehicle sales also hit record levels as American buyers sought to take advantage of incentives before they expired, said Charles Lester, managing director of Rho Motion. The $7,500 electric vehicle tax credit is set to expire.
In September, sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in Europe rose 36% to 427,541 units, while sales in North America rose 66% to around 215,000 units. Sales in the rest of the world rose 48% to 153,594 units. Europe also reportedly reached a new high, helped by incentives in Germany and strong demand in the UK.
"With the withdrawal of federal stimulus, demand in the US is expected to fall sharply in the last quarter of the year. Some automakers, such as General Motors and Hyundai, are trying to soften the blow by offering discounts or using dealer inventories, but overall production is declining," Charles Lester concluded.
As we wrote earlier, in September 2025, Ukrainians registered almost 9,200 battery-powered electric vehicles (BEV). This is 114% more than in the same month last year. The main share was made up of passenger cars — 8,967 units, of which 2,261 were new (+160%), and 6,706 were used (+104%). Among the 223 commercial electric vehicles, 46 cars were new (in September 2024 — 13 out of 132). In addition, two more new electric buses entered Ukrainian roads.
In September 2025, electric vehicles also led the new passenger car market in Ukraine for the first time. Their share reached 33%, while last year it was only 15.3%.
