Valve has released (via NotebookCheck) an updated beta version of the Steam client for macOS, which now natively supports Mac computers based on Apple's M-series processors. This means that the program will now be able to run without the need to use Rosetta 2 for compatibility with the Intel version of the program.

The updated Steam client and Steam Helper are reportedly significantly faster than the Intel versions of the apps, offering a smoother interface and improved optimization for Apple's architecture. Key changes include the transition of the Chromium Embedded Framework to Apple Silicon, which has allowed for faster loading of web content in the Steam store.

To install the new beta version, go to Steam settings, select "Interface" and enable "Steam Beta Update". After restarting, the program will automatically update.

This update comes as Apple is phasing out support for Macs with Intel processors. With the release of macOS 27, the company plans to completely abandon Rosetta 2, completing the transition to its own chips.
