Apple will end support for some older Macs with the release of macOS 26

- 30 May, 09:00 AM

At WWDC 2025, which will take place on June 9, Apple will introduce a new version of macOS — codenamed Cheer. It will be the successor to macOS Sequoia, and it will be launched together with iOS 26 (formerly known as iOS 19). Both systems will receive an updated interface similar to visionOS, and new Apple Intelligence capabilities. However, not all Mac models will be able to receive these updates, writes Apple Insider.

Apple is planning to end support for some older Intel-based computers. Previous builds of macOS 26, according to sources familiar with the matter, are only compatible with the following devices: MacBook Pro 2019 and later, MacBook Air with M1 chip and later, iMac 2020 and later, Mac Pro 2019 and later, Mac mini with M1 and later, and all Mac Studio models.

This means that the 2018 MacBook Pro, 2020 Intel-based MacBook Air, 2017 iMac Pro, and 2018 Mac mini, the oldest models that supported macOS Sequoia, will no longer receive updates.

The same sources have previously accurately reported on the features of macOS Sequoia, iOS 18, and other Apple projects, so their data is considered reliable. They also noted that the first beta version of macOS 26 for developers will be over 17 GB in size, which is 2 GB larger than Sequoia.

The name of the OS may still change, although some parts of the file system mention "macOS 26". We will finally learn all the details at WWDC 2025.
