7 years after release: Star Wars Battlefront II sets new record for online players on Steam
Star Wars Battlefront II, which was released seven years ago, back in November 2017, has set a new record for the most concurrent players on Steam. According to SteamDB, the game had 18,060 concurrent players on May 25.
It is worth noting that the game did not immediately appear on Steam, as it was originally available in EA's own application (at that time Origin). The release on Steam, and at the same time on the Epic Games Store, took place in 2020. The total number of players on PC and consoles is probably many times higher.
This return was partly due to the release of the second season of the series Andor and the collaboration of the Star Wars franchise with the Fortnite battle royale, which launched in early May.
Despite the fact that Star Wars Battlefront II was released with a loud scandal due to microtransactions, because in addition to the cost of $60, it also required $2,100 or 4,528 hours to unlock all in-game content, players still love this game and are eagerly awaiting a possible sequel.
Former Electronic Arts developers who worked on Battlefront II also share the fans' desire to continue the series. For example, Mats Helge Holm, one of the creators of the original game and the Celebration re-release, admitted on Reddit that he would like to return to the project. According to him, he has heard of similar sentiments among his former colleagues. However, whether this will ever happen is still unknown.
