Donald Trump recently imposed new tariffs on India, China, Thailand, Japan, and many other countries, which could reach 49% within a few months. Interestingly, Taiwan was also included in the list of “countries” published by Trump on Truth Social, although the US does not officially recognize the independence of the island.
The White House did not comment on the decision to include Taiwan, home to TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, on the list of “countries.” However, China’s ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, responded. He posted on X that “#Taiwan is Chinese Taiwan.”
At the same time, the US authorities, after introducing 32% tariffs on Taiwan, clarified that they will not apply to chips. TSMC's services are used by such large companies as Apple, whose shares have already suffered from Trump's actions, as well as NVIDIA, Broadcom, Marvell, MediaTek and Qualcomm. According to Reuters, the Taiwanese government said on Thursday that the US tariffs are unjustified and that they plan to discuss them in Washington.
We remind you that these are not the only strange decisions from the US president. Earlier it was reported that Trump imposed tariffs on volcanic islands near Antarctica, where only penguins live.
