US lawmakers concerned about Apple deal with China's Alibaba - NYT

- 19 May, 01:30 PM

According to The New York Times, the Trump administration and members of Congress are actively studying a deal between Apple and Alibaba that would include Alibaba's artificial intelligence in iPhones sold in the Chinese market.

Citing anonymous sources, the NYT notes that representatives of the White House and the US House of Representatives Committee on China have approached Apple management with questions about what data will be transferred to Alibaba and whether the company has obligations to Chinese regulators. However, according to the information, most of these questions have remained unanswered.

In a statement, House Representative Raja Krishnamurthy, the senior Democrat on the Standing Committee on Intelligence, described Alibaba as "a poster child for the Chinese Communist Party’s military-civil fusion strategy" and expressed "serious concern" about Apple’s lack of transparency regarding the deal.

So far, only Alibaba has officially confirmed the deal, while Apple has not yet made any public comments.
