Spotify finally launches lossless audio, announced back in 2021
One of Spotify's most anticipated features is lossless audio, which the company promised back in 2021. Now the service has started rolling it out, but only in select countries for now. Subscribers will receive a notification when the option becomes available.
With lossless audio, users will be able to stream FLAC tracks at 24-bit/44.1kHz quality, providing better detail in almost every song available on Spotify.
As before, users will be able to adjust the playback quality individually for Wi-Fi, cellular, and downloaded songs. In addition to low, medium, high, and very high quality, the service will now also offer the option of lossless listening.
Lossless audio will be available in the Spotify app on mobile, desktop, tablet, and many devices that support Spotify Connect, including Sony, Bose, Samsung, Sennheiser, and more. Support for additional devices, including Sonos and Amazon, is promised next month.
To take advantage of lossless audio, users will need to choose the appropriate playback quality on each device. On smartphones, this can be done in the "Media Quality" section of the settings, but in Ukraine and many other regions this option will only appear in October.
Spotify also recently added private messaging to the app. The company says that users of the service wanted a private space to share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks with friends and family.
