Sony is reducing the presence of Xperia smartphones in the European market

Japanese company Sony has announced a gradual reduction in its presence in the European smartphone market. The reason was the low profitability of the Xperia business in a number of countries. This is reported by NotebookCheck.

In Finland, the brand confirmed to the Suomimobili portal that it is completely ceasing sales of devices in this country, while in other European countries the products will only be available through the official Sony online store and Amazon, which excludes cooperation with local retailers.

The sales restriction coincided with the global discontinuation of the Xperia 1 VII model. This came after numerous user complaints about smartphone malfunctions, which were first noticed in Japan and then in other countries. The manufacturer has not yet identified the source of the malfunctions and therefore has stopped sales of the device for the time being.

According to Bloomberg, citing IDC, sales of Xperia smartphones in Japan fell by 40% in 2023. It is also known that in the first half of 2024, Sony's global share of the smartphone market was only 3.5%, which is slightly higher than that of HMD Global, ZTE and Asus.

Despite the restrictions, the company assured that it will fulfill all warranty obligations and provide software updates for the devices. Sony notes that it is constantly analyzing the demand and profitability of Xperia smartphones to determine the feasibility of continuing its presence in specific markets.
