Sony and Honda to release joint electric car in 2026 for the US and Japan
Sony Honda Mobility, a joint venture between Japanese companies Sony and Honda, announced its intention to begin mass sales of the Afeela 1 electric vehicle in mid-2026. MSN reports.
The new model will initially be available in California this year, with sales across the US starting in the middle of next year. Japanese buyers will be able to buy the car in the second half of 2026. The first models will be produced at Honda's Ohio plant, indicating a focus on the US market in the initial launch phase.
The Afeela 1 is positioned as a vehicle with a high level of artificial intelligence integration. The car will be equipped with two motors, all-wheel drive and a range of 480 km. The model will also be compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network.
The base model of the Afeela 1 will cost $89,900, making it an expensive debut for the company. Despite the high price tag, interest in the model is already showing, according to the source.
The car is equipped with a number of functions focused on artificial intelligence. In particular, an interactive AI assistant with voice control from Microsoft is provided, which should provide more natural interaction with the driver. The Afeela 1 also includes a multimedia system with support for YouTube, Spotify, Zoom and Epic Games services. Inside the car, an interactive media panel and a 360-degree sound system developed by Sony will be implemented.
In 2022, Sony and Honda formed a strategic partnership to develop electric vehicles and mobile services. The joint venture combines Honda's engineering expertise in automotive, safety and environmental technologies with Sony's digital competencies, including sensor technology, telecommunications, entertainment and AI.
