Sony has finally completely ceased its operations in Russia and liquidated its local representative office. The company officially ceased operations on August 11, 2025, almost 18 years after entering the market, Russian media reported.
Documents for the liquidation of the business in Russia were submitted to the Federal Tax Service even earlier - on October 10, 2024. Attempts to completely stop operations in the country were also made in 2023, but then the Japanese company was refused.
The decision to halt operations in Russia was made after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began. Almost immediately, console shipments were halted and the PlayStation Store was shut down. Over the past few years, Sony has been selling off its remaining stock.
In addition to stopping the work and supply of PlayStation, Sony has also stopped the distribution of films in Russia and is shutting down Sony Music. Meanwhile, in February 2024, the Japanese company began closing its branded stores.
By the way, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Sony has been providing Ukrainians with a free PlayStation Plus subscription, but at the end of last year the promotion was ended.
