iPhone users who connect their smartphones to CarPlay-enabled cars often mention the desire to have access to watching videos on the car's display. Apple, of course, does not support such entertainment, even if it is about watching movies or cartoons by passengers, not the driver. Similarly, videos cannot be played when the car is parked and not moving anywhere.
However, some developers still try to provide this option to users. Just as 9to5Mac reported on the appearance of a browser function for watching videos in the Sidecar application for CarPlay, it was removed a day later.
In general, the Sidecar: Automotive assistant application is another version of the OBS scanner (the device itself also needs to be purchased) with widgets, trip logs, maintenance reminders, etc. The developer also tried to provide the application with a video playback function. To do this, you had to launch the video via a link on your smartphone. Of course, for security reasons, you could only play streaming video in this way in a parked car.
However, Apple's guidelines prohibit such features, and the company asked developers to remove the browser. And this functionality was paid — $9.99. So now everyone who managed to pay to watch the video is being offered a refund, because the desired feature will no longer be there. You can do this through the application itself.
However, of course, this will not stop the "workarounds" with Android adapters that simultaneously support both CarPlay and playing any video. But Apple also continues to closely monitor that using native means, users cannot play videos through CarPlay regardless of whether the car is moving or stationary.
Meanwhile, the updated version of CarPlay, which Apple announced back in 2022, is still missing.
