IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said that artificial intelligence (AI) will not replace programmers in the near future, Tech Crunch reports.

Speaking at SXSW 2025, Krishna noted that while AI can automate up to 20-30% of coding, it cannot completely replace human labor. He emphasized that AI will help increase the productivity of programmers, not reduce their number.

Krishna also criticized predictions that 90% of code will be generated by AI within a few months. He believes that complex tasks will remain beyond the capabilities of AI. He also compared the debate about the impact of AI on the workplace to the discussions about calculators and Photoshop, which did not replace mathematicians and artists, but became tools to improve the quality of work.

Krishna stressed that AI is just a tool that improves the quality of products and services. He also noted that the development of technologies such as quantum computing can be the key to new scientific discoveries, while AI is based on existing knowledge.
