Sega is preparing a film adaptation of the game OutRun, which will be directed by Michael Bay
Universal Pictures is set to produce a film adaptation of Sega's classic racing game OutRun. Michael Bay (Transformers) will direct the film, and Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney will serve as one of the producers, the Hollywood Reporter writes.
The script will be written by Jason Rothwell. Plot details are not being revealed at this time.
OutRun is a legendary game from Sega that first appeared on arcade machines in 1986. Since then, it has been re-released many times for various consoles and remains one of the most popular games in the Sega collection.
The film is being produced by Platinum Dunes, a studio founded by Michael Bay and Brad Fuller, and Sega itself. Sega Corporation President Shoji Utsumi is in charge of the project on behalf of the gaming company.
By the way, this is not the first time Sega has collaborated with Hollywood: the film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog turned out to be an unexpected hit. The first film in 2020 grossed over $300 million at the global box office, and the subsequent sequels have grossed even more.
