Samsung wins US lawsuit against BOE over OLED patent infringement
The US International Trade Commission (USITC) has ruled in favor of Samsung Display in a case of patent infringement on OLED technology by Chinese manufacturer BOE, The Korea Times reports.
This legal battle has been ongoing since early 2023, when Samsung discovered that US wholesalers were importing OLED panels made by BOE using Samsung's patented technologies. In November 2024, the USITC made a preliminary finding in Samsung's favor, and this week it confirmed it, finding infringement of three Samsung Display patents.
However, the commission decided not to ban BOE from supplying OLED panels to the US market because the violations did not have a significant impact on the US industry. Nevertheless, the USITC decision is considered an important success for Samsung Display, as it could affect a similar case pending in a Texas court.
The dispute also reflects the competition between Samsung and BOE for the OLED display market, particularly for Apple. While BOE has managed to enter Apple's supply chain, its panels have often been rejected due to quality issues, solidifying Samsung's position as a major supplier.
