Samsung postpones mass production of 1.4nm chips to 2029

- 2 July, 09:33 AM

Samsung Foundry has postponed the start of mass production of 1.4-nm chips for two years — from 2027 to 2029. This is reported by Android Headlines with reference to ETNews.

This decision is related to the company's desire to focus on improving the 2nm process technology, which currently shows a yield rate of about 40%. For comparison, Samsung's main competitor, TSMC, announced the launch of chip production on the 1.4nm process technology in 2028, and the yield rate of their 2nm chips is already above 60%.

Back in March, there were rumors that Samsung might temporarily pause development of the 1.4nm process to avoid repeating the yield issues that occurred during the transition to the 3nm architecture. The South Korean manufacturer's main goal now is to increase the "utilization rate" of existing lines before introducing more complex processes.

Although postponing the start of production could strengthen TSMC's position in the market, Samsung is focusing on gradually improving the technological process, choosing stability and increasing production efficiency in the long term.
