Samsung releases first QD-OLED monitor and several other new products
Six months ago, Samsung announced its first monitor with a QD-OLED screen, the Smart Monitor M9. It has finally arrived on the market. In addition to it, the South Korean company also released the updated Smart Monitor M8 and M7, which received technologies based on artificial intelligence.
All new products are equipped with 32-inch displays, while the M7 is also available in a 42-inch version. The devices are already on sale in South Korea: the top-of-the-line Smart Monitor M9 costs about $1,460, the M8 costs $660, and the price of the M7 varies from $410 to $500. The monitors will be released in other markets later.
The most interesting offering, of course, is the Smart Monitor M9, equipped with a QD-OLED panel with 4K resolution and a Glare-Free coating to minimize glare. It has a refresh rate of 165 Hz, a response time of 0.03 ms, 250 nits of typical brightness and 400 nits of peak brightness. It also received VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification and support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and NVIDIA G-Sync technologies.
The new product has 10W stereo speakers and a solar-powered remote control. The monitor also has a 5MP 4K webcam and an IR sensor for face recognition, far-field microphones and a height-adjustable stand. Among other things, the Smart Monitor M9 has Wi-Fi 5, AirPlay 2, Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4, Type-C with 90W Power Delivery support and two USB 3.0 Type-A ports.
The most interesting is QD-OLED technology, which combines a fusion of quantum dots (QDs) and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to take advantage of the best aspects of both technologies. Unlike conventional OLEDs, such monitors have better color volume and brightness. This is achieved by emitting color from the outside of the display.
The other two new models, the Smart Display M8 and M7, like the flagship M9, run Tizen OS with One UI and will receive OS updates for seven years. They also feature artificial intelligence technologies like Samsung Vision AI in the M9, which uses the NQM AI Gen 3 chip to upscale content to near 4K resolution.
Both monitors come with Samsung’s VA panel and support AI-powered search tools, including Click to Search.
