Samsung may introduce subscription for some Galaxy Watch features

Samsung wants to transform its Galaxy Watch smartwatch from passive tracking devices to proactive health monitoring devices. To that end, the company is introducing a number of new features that are currently in beta and may become paid in the future.

In an interview with CNET, Dr. Hong Park, Samsung's senior vice president and head of digital health, said the company is considering introducing a subscription model like Fitbit Premium and Garmin Connect+. Ideally, it would open up leading health monitoring features to older devices, while new watches would offer them for free.

Samsung is already testing some new features, including health monitoring, for the Galaxy Watch, which is expected to launch in July. Among the innovations are a non-invasive blood test that measures antioxidant (or carotenoid) levels, a cardiovascular assessment, a personalized sleep coach, and an AI-based running score with live feedback.

Most of the new features are available in beta on the latest Galaxy Watch models, with a full release expected on the next-generation smartwatch, which will debut at Galaxy Unpacked in July. As for the subscription, Samsung hasn't revealed any more details.
