AI lab Perplexity has signed a deal to integrate its assistant into Motorola smartphones. Negotiations are also underway with Samsung on this matter, Bloomberg reports.
According to anonymous sources, the details of the deal with Samsung are still being discussed. It is possible that it will include both the use of Perplexity's AI assistant by default on the company's smartphones and the pre-loading of the app.
The Perplexity deal is complicated by Samsung’s extensive collaboration with Alphabet Inc., which is responsible for many of Samsung’s AI features and provides the default search engine. However, Samsung has been developing a relationship with Perplexity for months, and the company’s investment arm NEXT backed the startup last year.
The deal with Motorola includes pre-loading Perplexity as an alternative to Google's Gemini assistant, and developing a custom user interface for the updated Motorola Razr foldable smartphone.
Motorola now offers its own AI system and access to Google Gemini. Samsung is taking a similar approach, offering its Bixby service alongside Google's AI platform.
Earlier this year, Perplexity signed a deal with Deutsche Telekom AG in Europe to develop an AI phone. The smartphone is expected to debut by the end of 2025.
