Following a landmark court ruling that limits Apple’s control over payments in the App Store, Patreon has announced plans to update its iOS app, The Verge reports. The move will allow creators to accept payments outside of Apple’s system, allowing them to keep a larger share of the revenue.
Apple previously forced Patreon to use its in-app purchase system, charging a 30% fee on all new memberships purchased through iOS. Failure to comply with these rules could result in the app being removed from the App Store. Patreon now plans to submit an app update to Apple to allow for alternative payment methods. Spotify and Proton are also preparing similar updates to bypass Apple's fee.
Apple, although it has agreed to comply with the court order, plans to appeal it to regain control of payments. Patreon has not yet announced the exact release dates for the update.
